Just signed up!

I signed up for whiplash yesterday - definitely check it out! It seemed a lot more open and inspiring than this go-round of back-tack, and the geek in me is excited to put the power of a Wordpress blog to good use! Prizes don't hurt, either, but with an impending move a few months off, the last thing I need is more stuff. :)

This week's theme is everyday creativity, which is tantalizingly open-ended. A few people have already posted their projects already! I am so impressed. I'm flying off to Maine this afternoon to spend a weekend with friends celebrating passover and easter, so I don't know how much time I'm going to have to dedicate. But the idea will give me something to doodle in my sketchbook on the plane ride up.

Another interesting meme winding its way around right now is the Use What You Have group on flickr. This is right up my alley! I have a ton of random supplies that I need to work on depleting before my move in August, so hopefully between this and whiplash I'll have some things to post about. :)

Tagged: Five

Allsorts has tagged me, so here goes!

1. Five minutes to yourself: how would you spend them, ideally?
Lying on the hanging swing on my back patio, thinking.

2. Five bucks to spend right now: how would you spend it?
Lunch! No seriously, I am really hungry right now. Food aside, I'd probably go to the art supply store and geek out.

3. Five items in your house you could part with, right now, that you hadn't thought of already?
The weeds in my front yard. The weeds in my back yard. The weeds growing on pots on the deck! My guest bed. The bizarre logo-festooned duffel bag my company had printed for us.

4. Five items you absolutely, positively could never part with in your house?
My work table. The cozy armchair next to the window in the kitchen. The painting Adam gave me last summer. My camera. My computer.

5. Five words you love? New word for today: adorkable. superfluous. simple. gobsmacked. schnazzy.

No Fear

Dressform
I've been either out of town or hosting guests for the last two weekends, but today I finally was able to make something for whiplash! Bright and early this morning I was wandering around my basement looking like a saranwrap-clad alien, systematically covering myself in gummed paper tape. I've wanted to try my hand at making tops or altering tshirts on my own dress form for a while, but I found as I got closer to making one I had a bit of fear as well. A life-sized model that allows you to see everything your body is (and isn't) in three dimensions - every girl's idea of a good time! :)

I used the techniques described here. Unlike the article, I was doing this on my own, so I did have to extricate myself via a cut down the front center instead of sides or back. It made for some awkward seaming around the bustline, but I also didn't have to stand immobilized from the waist up waiting for my boyfriend to wake up!
