Please excuse the absence
February 26, 2006

Wow, has it been a long time since I've updated things here! I spent all of December and most of January in the throes of applying to graduate school. It was hard work, and I came out the other side worn out and ready to take a break from artistic projects for a while. I could barely make myself get back near a computer (a dilemma, considering I make a living with one), much less open Illustrator and play with my graphics tablet.

When I find myself at the bottom of my creativity cycle, I usually end up organizing and cleaning up. This go round was no exception - I personally went through every magazine in my house, clipped out the images that inspired me, and recyled them. ALL of them. I had to get my boyfriend to take the recycling out for three weeks straight because it was filled so heavily with years and years of Real Simple and Dwell that I couldn't carry it. It felt good to see it all leave, though.

Sometimes the cheapest form of decorating is to get rid of things. I have all this empty space on my shelves now, and a more streamlined feel in my studio and office.

Look out, closet. You're next.

p.s. I love and adore Apartment Therapy for, among many things, their concept of cleaning as a therapeutic, restorative process. Check out their cleaning archives.

Patterns

I'm inspired by patterns today, specifically the intricate tile, stone, and iron designs often found in mosques and the middle east. Flickr is, as always, a marvelous resource:
