With summer close at hand, I find that most of my crafty endeavors start to trend towards outdoor projects and things for my garden. Lately I've been planting and digging and mulching up a storm outside!
One thing I did recently was buy some trees from the Arbor Day Foundation. Not only does this satisfy the treehugger in me, but the trees are dirt (ha!) cheap, which satisfies my shoestring tendencies. I bought a 1-year old Japanese Red Maple sapling for about $7, and because it was so economical I tossed in a regular Red Maple and a Lacebark Elm for good measure. I'm growing them in pots, and I know that my Japanese Maple is the only one with a decent chance of surviving in a container for very long, but hey - I only spent twenty bucks! So far my Red Maple is the speedy one:

A project looming on the horizon deals with a myriad assortment of growers pots that my landlord has left behind on my back patio:

There are about ten in all. They are huge - the largest are ten gallons at least - and the soil in them is still quite fertile, but they are ugly as sin. I had a bunch of stray seed packets still lying around from my family's holiday gift exchange, so I planted each one with a different wildflower (with the exception of one planted with spinach). Hopefully lots of green foliage will distract from all that black plastic!
Sometime soon I want to construct some simple wrappers for them so they don't stand out so much. I've found a few projects online but none have really grabbed be so far:
- Antiqing a plastic pot
- Bamboo Container Wrapper (second down)
