Quick Collage

First things first: take a look at the space where you'll be hanging this art. Do you want to hang one big picture? Three smaller ones in a row? Once you've decided on that, its time to think about color.

Step 1
Pick three colors that already appear in your room. Or, if this is a yet-to-be-created room, pick three colors you want to be in this room. If you're having trouble deciding, try: your couch color, you wall color, and your personal favorite color.

Step 2
collage-materials.jpgHead to your art store and buy a couple of sheets of each of these colored papers. Also add one neutral color (offwhite or gray) to your pile. You can buy fine art paper like Canson or Strathmore, or even construction paper works. The papers in the example photos are inexpensive handmade papers from India that are sold by the pound.

Step 3
collage-cut-strips.jpgOnce at home, lay out your frames and your paper on a large work surface. Cut each piece of paper into large strips of varying widths. Vary the edges by tearing one strip, or cutting it with a patterned scissor.

Step 4

Step 5

The wonderful part about this type of artwork is that you can change it whenever you feel like it. You could even make it coordinate with a holiday by adding pieces of your wrapping paper or ribbon to the collage.
