Papered Storage Boxes

Materials
Flat cardboard box (you may have to temporarily cut the box along one of its seams to get it to lie flat)

Cloth or paper to cover it

Adhesive

Some heavy books

Fabric organizing bins are one of my favorite strategies for keeping things in line in my house - especially my studio. Nothing is unmanageable if its stowed away in colorful, labelled, tidy boxes. But I rarely want to spend the $10-$15 for what is essentially a cardboard box covered in fabric. My solution? Buy a cardboard box and cover it myself.

Step 1
Lay out your paper/fabric and your flat box. Spray your box with adhesive on the side that will become the outside of the box. (If the instructions for folding the box are printed on the cardboard, make sure you learn then before you cover them up!)
Step 2
Place the tacky side of the cardboard on the underside of the paper/fabric and smooth out.
Step 3
Using a couple of heavy books, weight down the two pieces so that they will dry flat and secure.
Step 4
Cut all the excess paper/fabric away from the cardboard, leaving a one inch strip around the edges. Using more adhesive, fold over the edges of the paper and attach them to the underside of the cardboard. You may have to make small cuts in the corners to get it to fold neatly.
Step 5
When everything is dry, fold up the box like normal! If you had to cut along one seam to get the box to lie flat, carefully reattach it on the inside using strong tape.

Upgrades
One way to upgrade this project is to glue a small label holder to the front. Or take strips of colored paper and create patterns on the box.
