Mosaic Pots

Mosaics can make any ho-hum garden pot come alive. All you need is some glue, some mosaic tiles (or any broken china you have lying around), and some grout! To get super detailed, you can find tile and glass "nippers" at your local art supply or hardware store. You can find out more information on finding mosaic supplies here.

Step 1
Set out supplies on a clean, flat work surface thats protected with something dustproof and waterproof.

Step 2
Plan your pattern. Lay out pieces of tile on a flat surface ahead of time, or draw guide lines on the pot itself. You'll never see the lines when the piece is done, so there's no need to be a perfectionist. Remember that you need to leave room for some grout in between each tile. Its also best to use tiles that are of similar thicknesses so that you don't have awkward spaces to grout later.

Step 3
Get your glue on! Depending on how obsessive you are, this can take one hour or five. I personally usually clock in at about the three to four hour mark. The smaller and more intricate your pattern, the longer you'll be sitting there. Bring snacks.

Step 4
Let the glue dry. This doesn't take all that long, but be sure to wait the total amount of time recommended on your glue bottle.

Step 5
Mix the grout with water according to its instructions. If you're squeemish about getting dirt under your fingernails, try donning some rubber protective gloves. They protect your hands, but are also thin enough that you can still feel the surface of your tiles.

Step 6
Slop the grout onto your piece. Don't worry if you cover the tiles the first time around. You can always take grout away, but adding more later is much harder. Use your fingers to press grout into the crevices between each tile. Let the grout sit 10-15 minutes, until it is set but not totally dry.

Step 7
With a sturdy paper towel, rub the tiles down in a small, circular pattern. Don't worry if you see a lot of small grout pellets falling off! This motion will give you a smoother finish to the grout, as well as clean off any glue or grout stuck to the tiles.

Step 8
Take a slightly damp sponge and gently wipe the piece, this time in smooth, straight strokes. This will give a final smooth finish to the grout and cut down on dust.

Step 9
Take one final pass at the piece with another clean paper towel, again in a circular motion. This time you should only really need to rub down the tiles themselves so that they are shiny.

Step 10
You can repeat this cycle a few times if its a large pot, or the grout was particularly messy. But typically you only need to do it once. Then let the pot dry overnight!
