If you have a few empty picture frames lying around, and access to a decent printer, then this project is the one for you. If you don't have the time or inclination to make some instant art, why not print it?
There are several good sites on the net that offer high quality, high resolution images for your personal enjoyment. If you're intending to make money off of the images they cost a bit of money, but if you intend to only use them for personal enjoyment then they are free for the taking! Yet another reason why the internet rocks.
The most important part of this project is the printer. I typically mooch off of my company's color laser printer while at work, but any decent home office inkjet will do quite nicely. Find a couple of coordinating images that you like, print them out, stick them in a frame, and voila! Instant art gallery.
Try to find two or three photographs that convey the same tone or theme. Or even pick three pictures that are totally unrelated except for their dominant color! You can also print out photographs with very high contrast in black and white for a very elegant look.
Here are a few free stock image sites to try:
Image*After
This is a great site that only recently went live. Its run by a couple of designers who, after running into difficulty in their own projects, decided to make it easier for people to find quality, un-edited, high-resolution images. The selection is astounding, and they have a very nice lightbox tool that keeps track of the images you like.
Inertia Stock Exchange
Inertia is an online forum for independant and amateur photographers. People submit their digital images, and those that get past a jury are posted online for the public's general use. There are a few rules with this site - you are encouraged to contact the photographer and let them know how you are using the image, and each person has their own licensing rules regarding use of the image for profit. But its still an outstanding resource!
