Free and frugal: Dividing
Two years ago I bought a small, $10 ornamental grass at my local garden center. (below, see the tall grass in the larger blue pot - its called Bloodgrass for the bright red color of the tips) Given a little water and a lot of sun, it thrived in its pot until you couldn't even see the soil. When it came time for me to move, I spent an hour dividing the root ball and repotting the smaller plants in new pots. My original $10 investment yielded me five new plants!
After taking cuttings and growing from seed, this is one of the cheapest ways to fill your house and patio with lots of plants. To learn more about dividing, check out Dividing Perennials: Tools, Techniques, and Timing.
